Test Management

Overview

The complexity of technical solutions is increasing. Software is driving this but is also a risk. Failures in software can be critical. Not only Mars vehicles and space rockets stop functioning or are destroyed, smal errors in excel programs can also cost millions.

Therefore, it is important to systematically test software and IT systems. Developers and users must be able to thoroughly test the internal and external integrity of software and IT systems. In particular, the environment needs systematic analysis, the risks related to the business processes must be assessed,  test objects (review and test items) identified, project specific tests designed and planned, tests specificed and executed,  test results reviewed and consolidated as a basis for decision-making by management.

During the preparation phase we develop the system context together.

Audience

Test managers, project managers, testers

Learning Objective

As a test manager

  1. you know that in the context of IT projects the test concept is established based on the chosen architecture, on the business risks, the maturity of the system and on the capability of the development organisation. You define the adequate test objectives, verification techniques (review and test techniques), identify the necessary test activities and plan them, choose the relevant resources and prepare them.
  2. you know that
    1. it is not possible to test the entire system,
    2. test cases need to be identified according to the probability of failure,
    3. during test execution you assess what has been tested and how well.
  3. you estimate to which extent tools can support testing and the kind of infrastructure required for testing.
Learning Steps
  1. Basis of testing – Motivation, activities, psychological aspects
  2. Testing as process and part of the development and software life cycle - testable requirements, risk assessment, from concept to tests, test types
  3. Test management – Tests in the project phase, strategies
    1. Planning, assessment, monitoring, reports
    2. Documentation and norms
    3. Risk management
    4. Configuration management
    5. Defect management
  4. Decision taking on one's own project, support release decisions – Coaching, consulting, implementation
  5. Some test techniques for managers
